Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has never really given up on the hope of signing Neymar. He has spent months trying to snatch him away from FC Barcelona.

He’s never candidly accepted that Neymar preferred to play at Camp Nou. And therefore he has dedicated a lot of time into trying to convert the 24-year-old maestro into the new Luis Figo.

Those hopes once again collapsed on June 30. It was when Neymar formally confirmed he’d decided to renew his contract with Barça until 2021.

A number of Europe’s elite clubs were circling in a bid to lure Neymar away from Catalonia. But that was before he penned his new deal at the Nou Camp last week.

Neymar cost Barca more than £50million when he signed in 2013. He had two years to run on his initial contract. Later he agreed terms that will witness him stay with the five-times European champions until 2021.

Curiously, Madrid have since promptly got to work on making a move for another young Brazilian star, Gabriel Jesus. Interestingly, he happens to be on Barcelona’s agenda as well. It’s not a surprise at all.

Perez will not stop until he feels he’s gained back some of the pride which he lost in the fight with Barça for Neymar.

For that reason, Madrid have already sent people to Sao Paulo to negotiate with Palmeiras.

Gabriel Jesus’ European representative, the Italian Giovanni Branchini, arrived in Brazil too on Friday with an offer under his arm.

Madrid’s president has assumed Gabriel Jesus has the potential to be the ‘New Neymar’. His response has been immediate. He’s made a confident move for the forward with the aim of taking revenge on Barcelona. He wouldn’t be able yet to cope with another defeat.
